A TRUE COLLABORATION
Growing up in Gembrook in the foothills of Victoria's Dandenong Ranges, our family loved the bush and in particular the sight and sweet smell of the flowering wattle trees that appeared each Spring. ‘Wattle’ is inspired by that magical Australian scene and the golden flowers that remind us of home.
The prototypes for the collection were fist designed in-house in our design studio in Pakenham, using 3D printing. We wanted to explore a more contemporary aesthetic for the traditional medium of Bone China. We created shapes that were straight sided and minimalist in their profile. Once the pieces were 3D printed and approved in Pakenham, they were sent to our bone china factory in China for modelling. These were expertly executed by the factory and finished bisque piece were then sent to Australia for us to have a play with surface design.
Our desire was to craft a collection that was hand painted. This is incredibly exciting as the art of hand painting bone china has long been lost to decal manufacturing. We received two bisque pieces of each shape in Pakenham from our Chinese friends to practise and design the collection.
We needed to balance the design, making sure that it was simple, and reflected the shapes, but also was easy to hand paint in mass production. Once confirmed, a video of the design application and brushstrokes was created and sent to China for their artisans to copy.
It is with great pride that we release the Wattle collection - a true collaboration with our fellow potters in China, and a modern take on an age old technique and material. A collection that is unique in the marketplace.
